Probably the only thing I’ve done in art that I’m proud of… #reading #dream #ad (Taken with instagram)
Being raised by a Hispanic father and Anglo mother has led to me never learning Spanish. Despite the fact that my dad’s family calls me mija and tells me select dichos, I never learned how to fluently speak Spanish. Up until about 6 months ago, I wasn’t even able to form a coherent sentence-…
I wasn’t really sure how else to respond to this. I’m still kind of a noob to Tumblr; I’m more so a viewer than a blogger because I get lazy. But enough about me. I just saw this and I knew I had to find some God given way to respond. So here I go. :)
I’m only a Sophomore right now, but any college that denies you acceptance because you don’t speak Spanish obviously doesn’t deserve you anyway. If they’re trying to be more culturally sensitive and/or culturally diverse, they shouldn’t stereotype like that to begin with.
I’m of mixed ethnicities but I claim my black side and people always tell me “Oh, well you’ll get into that college because you’re black and they have an affirmative action program.” I was born out of wedlock but I didn’t have a hard life. If a college ever denied me acceptance because of that, thinking that I was supposed to be some black child with a hard past, my mom would be on that ish.
If anything, you not speaking Spanish makes you more unique. You obviously want to succeed and that’s all that matters. We need more people like you who don’t fit the automatic stereotypes of Whites, Blacks, Hispanic, Asians, etc. They’re the ones that will bring change to America.
I personally love Spanish. I was exposed to it at a young age and sometimes took private lessons. In my class, people probably wouldn’t expect me to get straight A’s in that class but I wear it with pride. I’m Black and I love Spanish. Who cares if that doesn’t make me “black enough?” You don’t speak a lot of Spanish, but I assure you that you’re still a great person.
If you really wanted to learn Spanish, you could definitely learn it :) If you can understand it, you’ll be able to mimick it in no time. With me, I have the easiest time reading and translating it. Don’t let those boundaries hold you back, sweetie. You need to learn to say, in Spanish, “I don’t speak Spanish. Got a problem? Goodbye.” “No hablo español. Tú tienes una problema? Entonces adiós.”
Be proud to break stereotypes. I like you even more because you don’t speak Spanish and I don’t even know you :)
All right. Wrapping this up. I got kind of carried away. Just be proud of who you are. If you aren’t: change it. You have the power to do so. :)
